Not all concrete slabs are created equal — and the approach to polishing them isn't either. Here's what sets existing slab polishing apart from new slab work.
One of the most common questions we get at NuCrete Ohio is: 'Can you polish my existing concrete floor?' The short answer is yes — but the process looks quite different from polishing a brand-new slab, and understanding those differences helps set the right expectations for your project.
New slabs offer a clean slate. The concrete is uniform, free of previous coatings or adhesives, and hasn't been subjected to years of traffic, spills, or surface damage. When we polish a new slab, we're working with a predictable substrate. We can dial in the grit progression, densifier application, and final sheen level with a high degree of consistency.
Existing slabs tell a different story. Years of use leave behind adhesive residue from old flooring, surface contamination from oils and chemicals, cracks, spalls, and joint deterioration. Before any polishing can begin, we need to assess the slab's condition thoroughly — and in most cases, invest significant time in surface preparation.
Surface prep for existing slabs often includes adhesive and mastic removal, shot blasting or aggressive diamond grinding to open the surface, crack repair and joint restoration, and moisture testing. Skipping or rushing any of these steps leads to poor results — uneven sheen, delamination, or a floor that looks great for six months and then fails.
The age and mix design of the concrete also matters. Older slabs may have softer aggregate that polishes differently than modern high-strength mixes. Some slabs have hard trowel finishes that require more aggressive initial cuts. Others have surface contamination so deep that polishing simply isn't the right system — a coating or overlay may be a better fit.
At NuCrete Ohio, every existing slab project starts with a thorough on-site assessment. We evaluate the concrete's condition, test for moisture, identify any contaminants, and give you an honest recommendation — whether that's polishing, a coating system, or a combination approach. The goal is always a floor that performs for the long term, not just looks good on day one.
If you're considering polishing your existing concrete floor, give us a call. We'll walk the space with you, answer your questions, and put together a proposal that reflects the actual condition of your slab — not a best-case scenario.
